Emma Lynn B

Emma Lynn is an artist who focuses on the concept of sexual relationships, femininity, the relationship between women and nature. A graduate of The Ohio State University she is well versed in more than just art. She takes time to experiment through multiple mediums, most notably photography and oil painting. Responsible for three separate murals, one commissioned in 2010, another 2017, and the final in 2018, she is no stranger to unconventional work surfaces. Additionally her work was shown annually in the Hopkins Undergrad Art Show every year from 2015 to 2018. In 2015 Emma had her photography piece “Anxiety” published in Photographer’s Forum: Best of College and High School Photography.

Born in Virginia and raised in Columbus Ohio, Emma Lynn has had the fortune of being around a continually growing art scene, with institutions like Columbus College of Art and Design (CCAD) and the Columbus Museum of Art just a short drive away.

Growing up, Emma Lynn attended Saturday Morning Art Classes offered at CCAD, from 1st grade to 12th grade, thanks to the support of her maternal Grandmother and Great Aunt. These classes provided the foundations for art practices that allow Emma Lynn to express her feeling and interpretations of the world around her.

Armed with a wealth of knowledge and a desire to create, Emma Lynn is one of the many emerging artists from Ohio.

Artist Statement

CREATOR. GIVER. STRENGTH. BEAUTY. PROTECTOR. MIRACLE. CONNECTION. CREATION.

My work explores the femininity within women’s connection to animals, and in turn ourselves. It is a sin for a woman to find themselves beautiful, but we are stared at like the animals put in zoos and forced to participate in circuses. Why should we find ourselves any less beautiful than those exotic animals we observe from afar? We are at times no less trapped than the lioness controlled by the ring master, and yet like her, stay despite possessing the strength to break free. Do we fail to escape those who keep us restricted for fear the other won’t follow?

The bond shared by women and animals supersedes time, it is one of bonding, blood and creation. The stories of animals protecting women against abusive partners, taking on human infants of their own, and bonding for life are woven into female history.

Through the use of multiple mediums, I’m working on developing my understanding of the relationship women share with the animals they come in contact with, and what it is the two can learn from one another to grow and gain power.  My works explore the unusual settings of women embracing, protected by, and bonding with dangerous animals. A space where woman and animal are protected, and appreciated in their beauty by more than themselves, for more than just what they look like, but also for the balance they show, the power that they possess to create, make and control.

POWER. APPRECIATION. CONTROL. NATURAL. VISION. CONNECTION.
